Things like “pling-plong booths” (phone boxes), “bangshelters” (bomb shelters), “spiral groovers” (record players) and “chugyards” (train depots) dot the landscape, named using a brilliantly naive, post-apocalyptic English last seen in the closing third of the movie Threads.Īs you get to grips with the world, you also start to get deluged by Biomutant’s plethora of resource, upgrade and crafting mechanics. The language Shaw Parker uses underpins the delightfully odd, family-friendly aspect of a game, countering its dark undercurrents. He also pops up during general gameplay–interjections that will rankle some players, but the option’s there to restrict his commentary. It’s often tongue in cheek, with a sideways look to the player, as he speaks both to you and your character. Tampon health packs, toilet-brush weaponry, and urinating on fast-travel points are more overt examples of this–but the game’s central unique selling point comes from its idiosyncratic combination of second and third-person narrative.Įnglish actor David Shaw Parker acts as the game’s storyteller and his expertly voiced role provides Biomutant’s wistful, fairytale backbone. At the same time, Biomutant quickly establishes its uniqueness, along with its weird sense of humor. However, these parallels never feel plagiaristic–more like affectionate send-ups. Add to that a ton of nicely varied missions and puzzles, a wonderfully lush and dangerous world to explore, and numerous ways to customize your weapons (and yourself), and Biomutant finally becomes a sweeping, effortless, and ultimately engaging action-packed adventure. The Tree of Life and its huge roots are visible from nearly all parts of the map. The recent release of the game on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S also showcases this world in beautiful 4K for players that have upgraded screens, or at silky smooth frame rates at lower resolutions for the fast paced combat. It's then that the skirmishes get exciting, especially since they have you using guns, melee weapons, and magic-like attacks in concert to take out multiple enemies who attack from all sides. But everything changes when you finally get weapons that work well. Then there's the super chatty narrator, who has a penchant for dad jokes and cliché sayings, as well as such silly characters as an Elvis-loving beaver and a giant lizard in pajamas. It takes far too long for you to get weapons that are effective, and even then, your shooting skills are hindered by your inability to look down the barrel of your gun. What undermines this otherwise solid adventure game is how it's as flawed as it is silly. It's a good thing you're not only skilled with guns and melee weapons, but magic-like abilities as well. Either way, you spend your time running around a vast open world, getting into skirmishes with fellow anamorphic animals, running errands, scrounging around for supplies, and generally improving yourself enough to take on bigger enemies. In Biomutant, you play a sentient and bipedal rodent warrior who's either trying to save what's left of the Earth years after an environmental apocalypse wiped out humanity, or you're trying to hasten the world's demise. While problematic games are usually lost causes, this flawed and absurd open world third-person action-packed role-playing game eventually manages to become a fun and epic adventure. They also carry over the progress from the PS4 or Xbox One saved games. The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions take advantage of the visual strength of the newer systems, producing graphics that are visually vibrant - up to 4K resolution. A third-person, open world action-oriented role-playing game, this has you getting into numerous fights, exploring the landscape, scrounging for supplies, running errands for people, and completing missions that will advance the story. Using a variety of weapons, you must improve yourself and your skills so you can take on those who would hinder or hasten the coming apocalypse. Set long after humanity has ceased to exist, but has left its remnants behind, you play as a brave warrior who must use weapons, magic-like powers, and martial arts to stop the coming apocalypse or allow it to happen - the choice is yours Oh, and you're a sentient, bipedal rodent of some kind. While the World Tree still stands, a plague is ruining the land. In BIOMUTANT, the world's coming to an end.
